How King Chan plans to mainstream mental-health solutions in highly stressed Hong Kong

25th September 2026

In manageable doses, stress drives growth: muscles strengthen, memory sharpens and the mind learns to thrive. But prolonged, unmanaged stress can reverse those gains, devolving into mental, physical and emotional distress. For King Chan Kai-man, that dynamic is both a research focus and a routine observation in the real world.

“If you feel distressed, anxious and depressed, your emotions do affect [your body],” he says, pointing to physiological symptoms, such as disrupted sleep, changes in heart rate, fatigue and pain. It becomes cyclical: poor physical health affects mental well-being and mental distress feeds tension back into the body. “We need to look after ourselves physically just as much as we do mentally,” he adds.

Chan, 22, recently completed his undergraduate studies in psychology at City University. Soon, he will start an MPhil degree in foundations of clinical psychology at Britain’s University of Cambridge.
