AI tool aims to bridge communication divide

By HAN JINGYAN

Chinese entrepreneur Cheng Lu is exploring whether multimodal artificial intelligence can bring benefits beyond productivity gains to people long underserved by technology.

Cheng, a former Google developer relations program manager and Hugging Face Fellow, has developed the AI accessibility concept EchoBridge to focus on communication barriers between people who use sign language and those who communicate through speech.

EchoBridge comes as AI applications are expanding rapidly. From coding assistants and content generation to customer service and data processing, many products have focused first on productivity. As models become better at handling text, audio, images and video together, some problems once difficult to address are being reconsidered.

According to this year's Government Work Report, China is expanding the "AI+" integration, and bolstering the commercial and large-scale application of AI in key industry sectors.
